Each card showcases a letter with a vivid target picture, capital and lowercase representations, and a guide on mouth formation to help kids master each sound with confidence.

Long and Short Vowels Made Simple

From long “a” in “acorn” to both sounds of “u” in “student” and “unicorn,” children will learn long vowel sounds solidifying one of the most essential building blocks for reading.

Hands-On Blending with CVC Words

This deck comes with seven CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, perfect for practicing reading and blending skills. Whether sounding out “nut” or “fox,” kids will gain fluency as they work through these foundational words, building the confidence they need to read independently.

The front of the card shows an anchor picture of the sound the letter(s) makes.

The back of the card shows the letters on handwriting lens and the mouth formation as well as a description of how to make the letter sound.

SUGGESTED GAMES:

Sound Match-Up

  • Objective: Identify and match sounds to words.
  • How to Play: Lay out several cards face up. Say a word that starts with one of the sounds on the cards, like "bat" or "cat." Kids find the correct letter card and practice making the sound, mimicking the mouth formation shown on the card. Add a level of difficulty by mixing in words with long vowels!
  • Skills Practiced: Letter-sound correspondence, sound recognition.

With the Phonics Discovery Deck and these engaging learning games, children will embark on a phonics adventure like never before, building essential reading skills while having a blast along the way!

Vowel Detective

  • Objective: Distinguish between long and short vowel sounds.
  • How to Play: Lay out the vowel cards (a, e, i, o, u) and give examples of words with short and long vowel sounds. Kids pick the correct vowel card and say the long or short sound associated with the word. You can add pictures or objects around the house/classroom for additional clues.
  • Skills Practiced: Vowel identification, long/short vowel differentiation.\

Speedy Sound Challenge

  • Objective: Rapidly recognize sounds and letter shapes.
  • How to Play: Hold up a card, and have kids shout the letter sound and then form the sound with their mouth. For a fun twist, set a timer and see how many sounds they can correctly identify in one minute. Add CVC cards and challenge them to blend sounds within the time limit!
  • Skills Practiced: Letter-sound fluency, quick recall, blending.

Each card is 4 x 6 inches.
